123I- and 18F-labeled pharmaceuticals for imaging dopamine D2/3-high receptors in the human central nervous system (10127)

Project nummer: 10127

Omschrijving van het onderzoek

Dopamine (DA) is an important neurotransmitter in the brain and plays a major role in the regulation of motor function, reward, and cognition. The DA D2/3 receptors in its high affinity state represent the active form of D2/3 receptors and have been implicated in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia, addiction, and movement disorders such as parkinsonism. Imaging techniques such as SPECT and PET offer the unique opportunity to assess receptor binding in the living human brain. The purpose of this project is to develop both 123I- and 18F-labelled radiopharmaceuticals for imaging of D2/3 receptors in the high-affinity state with SPECT and PET, respectively.
The Universities of Amsterdam, Groningen, and Eindhoven (Technical University) are very experienced in the production and evaluation of novel radiopharmaceuticals. GE Healthcare in Eindhoven is very interested in the production and commercial exploitation of 123I- and 18F-labeled DA receptor ligands, and has obtained a lot of experience in the commercial exploitation of radiopharmaceuticals.
Neurologists and psychiatrists are very keen to start PET/SPECT studies with abovementioned radiopharmaceuticals in their patients.
This research approach may improve the clinical diagnosis and treatment of neuropsychiatric diseases.
