Time-lapse seismic reservoir characterization (DAR.5763)

Omschrijving van het onderzoek
Research
The aim of 4-D seismic exploration, also known as time-lapse seismic, is to monitor changes in hydrocarbon reservoirs in the Earth's subsurface as a result of production. It involves 3-D seismic measurements at different time instances, with an interval of typically 6 months to 3 years. Advanced imaging and interpretation techniques are required to characterise changes in the reservoir. With current 4-D techniques it is not possible to distinguish between changes due to substitution of hydrocarbons by water and changes in the pore pressure distribution of the reservoir.
For this project we propose to tackle this problem by including 'amplitude-versus-offset' (AVO) information in the 4-D imaging and characterisation sequence.
It is expected that this project will lead to a deeper insight in the relation between the different types of changes in a reservoir and the changes in the seismic AVO response (the forward problem) as well as to a method for 4-D seismic imaging and characterisation, taking optimal account of AVO information (the inverse problem).
Utilisation
The research will be carried out by a Ph.D. student at the Section of Applied Geophysics and Petrophysics in Delft, in close co-operation with Jason Geosystems, who will bring in their expertise in reservoir characterisation and rockphysics, and Shell Aberdeen, who will provide 4-D seismic data and carry out the basic processing and interpretation.
The project will be embedded in the larger 4-D research programme at the Section of Applied Geophysics and Petrophysics.
The project will lead to a number of research software modules, relating time-lapse changes in the angle-dependent reflectivity to time-lapse changes in pore pressure and saturation (forward and inverse).
The members of the user group are the potential users of these modules. In co-ordination with STW and the user group, Jason Geosystems can play a role in professionalising the new concepts and algorithms developed in this project.
