In this project, we investigate the applicability of the method of passive seismic interferometry by cross-correlation, i.e., without active sources, for frontier exploration for petroleum. The application of seismic interferometry in frontier exploration could lead to smaller exploration costs in high-risk areas and could make exploration possible in naturally sensitive and difficult-terrain areas, where exploration with active sources is not possible. For this project, we will apply the method on field data specially acquired for the purposes of the test. The data will comprise ambient seismic noise recorded with standard recording equipment. Most of the recorded noise will comprise unwanted surface waves. These waves drown the usefull body-wave arrivals. Using our experience in the field of seismic interferometry, we will test what are the best way to obtain retrieved body-wave reflections from the recorded noise. Based on the findings, we will give recommendations for acquisition parameters and processing steps for future exploration campaigns in frontier areas.
