Omschrijving van het onderzoek

This project aims at lowering the cement content in concrete in order to reduce energy consumption and CO2-emissions of concrete. Optimal mixture compositions for ecological concrete will be designed, by making use of a new design method based on particle packing models. These models increase the performance of concrete by filling the voids between cement particles with smaller particles. Applying this principle to low- and medium strength concretes offers the following advantages: Secondary materials like fly-ash, lime stone powder and incineration ashes, now often regarded as 'waste', are used as fillers and cement replacing materials. As such, those materials, which are available in large quantities, could get a very useful application, while the amount of cement is substantially reduced. The cement reduction will contribute to a reduction of the CO2-emissions by approximately 1 to 2 million tons of CO2, which is about 0.5 -1.0% of the total yearly emission in The Netherlands and a cost price reduction of about 5% per m3 of concrete.
