Harbour siltation in turbid waters (DCB.5723)
Project nummer:
dcb5723
Omschrijving van het onderzoek
The project "Harbour siltation in turbid waters" aims at understanding the physical processes responsible for the siltation with fine suspended sediment (mud) in harbour basins located in the vicinity of the turbidity maximum in estauries. The effects and their mutual interaction of tidal filling, flow-induced circulations and salinity- and sediment-induced density currents are studied with the help of field measurements and numerical modeling.
This project will deliver knowledge and data to develop and validate numerical models that can be used to simulate and predict siltation rates in harbour basins, to be used for engineering studies and consultancy work. Moreover, this knowledge can be used to design method to minimize said siltation rates, thus minimizing maintenance costs. Representaives of port authorities and fairway managers and dredging contractors participate in the User Panel.
