Omschrijving van het onderzoek

The aim of this project is to study stability of a submerged flexible pipe (riser) that conveys fluid and is subject to excitation by waves and currents. The main challenge is to discover the conditions of instability and the severity of the flow-induced vibration of a free-hanging pipe conveying water. It has been observed experimentally that the pipe conveying water is unstable beyond a critical convection speed. In the unstable regime the motion of the pipe is intermittent. It consists of an almost periodic orbital motion and a noise-like vibration around the equilibrium. It has been found that the most likely cause of the intermittency is a slow and small variation of the flow speed in the pipe. Relatively easy mathematical models have been formulated that can predict the experimentally observed behavior and can be used in the engineering practice. The models can be applied to predict the dynamics of submerged pipes conveying fluid and subjected to both direct and indirect wave action.
