Explosive spalling of concrete: towards a model for fire resistant design of concrete elements (07045)
Project nummer:
07045
Omschrijving van het onderzoek
Recent disasters with tunnel fires and other structures have shown that spalling of concrete is a major threat for structural safety in general and for the safety level of its users in particular. The current lack of understanding of the spalling phenomenon hampers the development of concrete mixtures with enhanced fire resistance and, as a consequence of that, the design of fire resistant concrete structures.
Detecting the mechanism that is responsible for (explosive) spalling of fire loaded concrete elements is the main objective of this research project and is examined by a so-called multi-scale approach (i.e. micro, meso and macro).
Two PhD students will start together on the micro-level, researching the dehydration of and boiling phenomenon in the microstructure at elevated temperatures. A third PhD will start two years later, elaborating this work towards the macro-scale level in terms of up-scaling. At this moment (dec '06), one PhD (TU/e) has started his work on the effect of boiling on the spalling mechanism.
