Internal resonance phenomena in distribution transformer windings (DET.6526)

Project nummer: det6526

Omschrijving van het onderzoek

Our society is increasingly dependent on a reliable supply of electricity. The power system itself, however, is changing rapidly. Because of the expected increase of local power generation in the next decade, the flow of electric power will change from unidirectional and predetermined to make chaotic and unpredictable. Switching devices have to configure a suitable distribution topology tailored to a specific power flow. Transformers are normally switched by circuit breakers and particularly vacuum circuit breakers (VCB) today dominate the distribution switchgear market. Despite good performances of these circuit breakers, they are likely under special circumstances to produce reignitions that can damage the transformer insulation. Reignitions, result in voltage and current oscillations that deteriorate the electrical insulation of transformers. The question from recent years that still needs to be answered is: 'what initiates a transformer failure when switched by a VCB'? The problem is to be found not in the imperfection of the circuit breaker or transformer, but in the compatibility of these elements to work together in a specific network. Circumstances have to be specified in which the problems mentioned above may be relevant. The internal resonance in transformers caused by oscillations from the reignitions in VCB is a major problem and should be investigated in detail. This project aims to model distribution transformers, capable to represent the distribution of overvoltages along the transformer winding. Modelling based on measurements with sensitive equipment should be performed on different types of transformers (dry- and oil-transformer) with different types of winding (layer- and pancake- windings).
