Omschrijving van het onderzoek

Processes on meso-, micro- and nanoscale determine the response of physical systems at macroscale. Examples are wing boxes or parts in the automotive industry manufactured from composite materials, where the configuration of the fibres determines the mechanical response. Processes at different length scales govern the ultimate response of a physical system. Another example is biomaterials: the behaviour of tissue is influenced by the flow of water and ions and the different sizes of the pores introduce a spectrum of time scales. The aim of the project is to seek solutions using numerical models simultaneously at the various length scales. The approach will be to attempt to resolve two length scales simultaneously: a coarse scale and a fine scale. The users group covers a wide spectrum: aerospace industry, manufacturing, software engineering, lightweight engineering, oil industry, biomedical engineering.
