Nucleation and growth kinetics of individual grains during solid-state phase transformations (DMC.6278)

Omschrijving van het onderzoek

Phase transformations play a critical role in the prediction of the microstructure during the production process of modern steel grades. Unpredicted results of the austenite decomposition often lead to undesired products. At the three-dimensional X-ray microscope of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility at Grenoble new in-situ techniques have been developed that combine a spatial and time-dependent characterization of the developing microstructure. The project will apply these to probe in one single measurement the three-dimensional microstructure of the parent phase, the grain nucleation and growth rates, and three-dimensional microstructure of the new phase. The results will contribute significantly to the industrial development of materials with superior strength and formability.
