Omschrijving van het onderzoek
The project aims at the development of efficient and stable numerical algorithms for problems where gas or fluid flows interact with material structures being cooled through a phase transformation. In these problems, encountered in industrial processes such as continuous steel casting, properties of the materials structures change dramatically due to the phase transformation. As a result the interaction between the materials structure and the flow changes during the process. These problems are so challenging since they include multiple physical systems and multiple scales.
A computational tool which provides an accurate simulation of the industrial process can aid in the optimization of the manufacturing techniques and make the end product more reliable.
However, industrial simulation codes have often been developed from a mono-disciplinary point-of-view and nowadays, due to increased computational power, more and more these mono-disciplinary tools are coupled together to tackle multi-physics problems. This is, unfortunately, not so straight forward as the strong mechanical and thermal coupling and rapidly changing material properties as the steel solidifies can easily result in instability or inefficiency of the simulation.
The project therefore aims at the development of efficient and stable algorithms for flows interacting with transforming structures.
