Shrinkage and stress reduction in thermoset resins by controlled crosslinking (06561)

Omschrijving van het onderzoek

Thermoset resins are materials like epoxy glue which transform from a viscous liquid into a strong, hardened polymer. During this transition the material shrinks, becomes gelly and starts to build up internal stresses. These stresses cause shape distortions (like warpage) and may lead to failure of the products in which they are used. This project aims to understand and model the shrinkage and change in mechanical properties of thermoset polymers during cure (hardening). In that way stresses in adhesive joints in delicate optical instruments can be better understood and undesired warpage of large composite telescope segments can already be accounted for in the design stage. An even better example is the encapsulation of integrated circuits with polymer (the black stuff surrounding chips). There, the material models developed during this project are used to simulate stresses during production and testing even before the chips are actually produced.
