Modelling and analysis of operations in railway networks: the influence of stochasticity (DWV.6072)

Omschrijving van het onderzoek

One of the key issues in designing reliable railway timetables is the computation of optimal running time margins and buffer times, which take stochastic train delays into account and enable maximal throughput of trains at a desired level of punctuality. An existing deterministic approach for the estimation of margins in railway network timetables based on max-plus algebra is extended by adding an effective perfect simulation algorithm so that the impact of stochastic running, arrival and departure times can be incorporated. We combine (1) the development of empirically validated models for train delay propagation with (2) efficient algorithms for dealing with a stochastic extension to the max-plus algebra technique and (3) an approximation analysis tool for determining consecutive train delays at junctions. The tool can be used by railway infrastructure managers and railway consultants to fine tune timetables, to forecast the impact of increasing the frequency of trains, new track infrastructure and modern signalling and safety systems on train operations in networks.
