Behaviour and design of trapezoidal corrugated steel sheets, subjected to the combined action of bending moment and concentrated load (ECB.6005)

Project nummer: ecb6005

Omschrijving van het onderzoek

Cold-formed thin-walled steel panels are particularly suited for sustainable building. They are very light and can be completely recycled. They are not only used in buildings, but also in means of transportation. For an economic application it is necessary that the load at which failure occurs can be predicted with sufficient accuracy. The aim of this research project is the development of accurate and insight providing design rules for interior supports in multi-span trapezoidal corrugated steel sheeting, where an interaction occurs between the bending moment acting in the sheeting, and the concentrated load (support reaction). Contrary to the empirical approach of the current design rules (based on curve fitting of test results), these new design rules will be based om mechanical models. Recent research shows that for relatively large bending moments and small concentrated loads (as occurring in practice) failure at an interior support may be regarded as failure by bending moment, modified by the concentrated load. The current design rules to determine the ultimate moment resistance are based on an effective width approach, which utilizes the post-buckling strength of flange and web elements. It will be investigated to what extent the post-buckling behaviour of the flange and web elements is influenced by the concentrated load and the deformations caused by this concentrated load. These influences will be studied by means of analytical research and numerical simulations, to be validated by tests. After combining the findings from analytical and numerical research, design rules will be developed, if possible based on modified effective width formulas.
