Extended theory and application of reduced-sample- rate sigma-delta modulation (ECS.5455)
Project nummer:
ecs5455
Omschrijving van het onderzoek
In an earlier Ph.D. research project the theoretical basis of a new technique has been laid, called "Reduced-Sample-Rate Sigma-Delta Modulation". This technique is a generalization of the conventional sigma-delta modulation principle. It can be seen as a breakthrough, as it enables the signal processing to be done at a fraction of the speed that is necessary in conventional sigma-delta modulation, without sacrificing the bandwidth of the signals that have to be processed. Or said differently: this technique can extend the application area of sigma-delta modulation to applications with larger bandwidths, so e.g. from audio and speech to video and xDSL. Just like with conventional sigma-delta modulation, the technique can provide the conversion from analog domain to digital domain, as well as the conversion from digital domain to analog domain.
The aim of this project proposal is to further elaborate the scientific aspects of this new "Reduced-Sample-Rate Sigma-Delta Modulation"-technique, and to give special attention to the application of it, both in general, for the variety of applications described above, and more detailed for one specific important application of it: AD and DA conversion in xDSL.
