Molecular Magnetic Resonance Imaging of MyocardialInfarction (07952)

Project nummer: 07952

Omschrijving van het onderzoek

The goal of the proposal is to develop magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques to image molecular processes following myocardial infarction in the mouse.
Cardiovascular diseases are reaching epidemic proportions in the Western world and are the largest cause of illness and morbidity as well as a major cause of death and premature death for the citizens of the European Union. Ageing of the population, increasing sedentary lifestyle and obesity contribute to the prospect that cardiovascular diseases will remain a huge health problem and put a major burden on society and on healthcare budgets in the future.
Molecular MRI is an emerging technology, in which non-invasive MRI, nanotechnology, genomics and proteomics are combined for the in vivo visualization of cellular and molecular processes. In recent years important progress has been made in developing the molecular MRI tools to target and characterize atherosclerosis in order to diagnose the vulnerable plaque. Myocardial infarction and the following healing process, which have stayed largely unaddressed until now, are the focus of the present proposal.
In this project molecular MRI using targeted contrast agents will be developed and applied to characterize the complex cascade of events in the acute phase after myocardial infarction, the subsequent inflammation and during the wound healing process. The focus will be on apoptosis, inflammation and angiogenesis. Furthermore, new dynamic MRI scanning techniques will be developed and applied to optimize the detection of low concentrations of contrast agent in the myocardium.
