Omschrijving van het onderzoek

The STW-project aims at the development of all-solid-state rechargeable batteries using porous silicon as base. The feasibility of energy storage in silicon has successfully been demonstrated by the development of integrated capacitors. Moreover, silicon was shown to be a very suitable electrode material with a much higher Lithium intercalation capacity than the conventional materials nowadays widely used in commercial Li-ion batteries. The main technological challenge in the development of highly porous all-solid-state batteries lies in the formation of this base material and the subsequent deposition of the individual layers forming the solid electrolyte and counter-electrode. The effectiveness of sol-gel, Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) and Atomic layer Deposition (ALD) will be explored. Mathematical modeling and computer simulations will provide useful insight into the transportation phenomena of both the etching and deposition processes and direct the experimental work.
