The formation of droplets in complex, highly supersaturated, gas-vapour mixtures is a hardly explored field in science. Reliable experimental data is spare. No complete validated theory is available. Still, it is a very important theme for natural gas industry. The present project will collect knowledge on nucleation rates, i.e. the rates at which new droplets are formed, for a series of well-defined thermodynamics (non-equilibrium) conditions, for vapour mixtures representing natural gas, selected because of their combined industrial and scientific relevance. It is the aim of the project to investigate the stimulating role of carbon dioxide and water/methane/carbon dioxide mixtures.
Natural gas as it is present in geological formations, not only contains methane, but also carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulphide, nitrogen and a large number of condensable components such as water vapour and heavy hydrocarbons. The separation of condensable components in natural gas is a formidable technical problem.
