Omschrijving van het onderzoek

In this project new techniques for femtosecond electron diffraction will be developed, which combine the single-shot capabilities of the X-ray Free Electron Laser with the accessibility and compactness of an electron microscope. The ultimate goal is studying structural dynamics of biomolecules at atomic length and time scales. The problem of Coulomb expansion of electron pulses associated with the charge concentration required for sub-picosecond, single-shot capability will be solved by advanced laser pulse shaping and radio-frequency accelerator techniques. In addition, an ultracold pulsed electron source, based on laser-cooled atoms, will be developed, which should provide orders of magnitude higher brightness than conventional pulsed sources. The combination should lead to the realization of single-shot femtosecond electron diffraction of macromolecules.
