Omschrijving van het onderzoek

The aims of the project are the development and validation of a new physical model that can be used in the simulation of the heating process of fluids by direct steam injection at relatively high temperatures and short residence times. Direct steam injection is used for heating of liquids, solutions and slurries. Applications are in the pulp/paper segment, the food industry and the chemical process industry, e.g. pharmaceuticals, textiles and plastics processing. Although most applications are in the paper industry, those of the food industry are best known as well as quite demanding.
The commercial relevance of the fast heating process is the increase in consumer acceptance of food products that are preserved during a long span of time without cooling. With the results of this project the Dutch process industry will take the lead in food preservation by developing a sterilizer that preserves the taste of milk.
The models and validation of the proposed project allow the design of a new generation of steam injectors and sterilizers. The results of the project are of direct relevance to the Dutch pulp/paper industry, the dairy industry and the process industry, as detailed in the above.
