Omschrijving van het onderzoek

The aim of this project is the development of an extended physical model for the calculation of the thickness of deposition that results after evaporation of a solvent from a droplet and of the distribution of (bio)molecules on/in the substrate. Some of the extensions envisaged are: porosity of the substrate, binding of molecules on the substrate and a concentration-dependent viscosity. Especially the properties of the substrate play an important role in the functionality of printed microarrays.
For experimental validation and assessment of relevant physical parameters, experimental techniques on evaporating droplets will be performed. Intended experimental techniques include Atomic Force Microscopy, interference contrast microscopy, fluorescent microscopy and methods based on affinity binding in the layer.
Success of the project proposed would mark a significant change in the manufacturing of microarrays, since the proposed experimentally verified numerical model will enable the identification of critical properties of spot formation.
