Development of dynamic stability prediction and optimization methods for virtual stability prototyping of thin-walled structures (EWO.5792)

Project nummer: ewo5792

Omschrijving van het onderzoek

Reliable and efficient prediction of dynamic stability behavior of thin-walled structures is one of the scientific challenges facing mechanics professionals, partially due to the existing of large number of variables, the strongly nonlinear nature and the multiplicity of solutions. Examples are various thin-walled structures used in aerospace industry (stiffened panels and shells), shadow masks (doubly-curved orthotropic panels) used in cathode ray tubes in PC monitors and televisions (see Appendix A), and components of Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) such as thin films and membranes (see Appendix B). Our preliminary research results already demonstrated the feasibility to develop an advanced dynamic stability prediction method by combining the solution partition method with nonlinear dynamics theory. The success of this project will provide the scientific and engineering
world with a method to achieve further progress for dynamic stability prediction and optimization of thin-walled structures, and to contribute to industries' business profitability. The developed concepts and theories will also be applicable for other nonlinear mechanics and structural problems.
The development and application of virtual dynamic stability prototyping structures will have a positive impact on both scientific community and industries. For the scientific community, realization of virtual prototyping requires further development of simulation-based optimization methods and integration of multi-disciplinary knowledge. For industry, realization of
virtual prototyping will make it possible to create competitive products first prediction methods.
