HyPerMotion: Hybrid Control for Performance Improvement of Linear Motion Systems (10953)

Project nummer: 10953

Omschrijving van het onderzoek

This project adopts a new perspective on high-performance control of linear motion systems by exploiting hybrid controllers. The use of hybrid feedback control will enable substantial improvements in speed and accuracy of industrial motion systems such as wafer scanners, optical disc drives, electron microscopes, copiers and robots.
Whereas the design of the mechanics and electronics of these high-tech systems is highly optimised, the implemented control designs generally rely on classical linear control theory.
To meet the increasing performance demands, the limitations present in the classical linear feedback design have to be overcome. This goal is central to this research project, which proposes a paradigm shift to hybrid feedback with the aim to remove these limitations. To enable this paradigm shift, the project will develop performance analysis and synthesis techniques for hybrid controllers for linear motion systems.
The approach taken is, firstly, to develop performance analysis tools that apply to the domain of nonlinear control systems. This will allow the systematic formulation of performance measures for nonlinearly controlled, linear systems. Secondly, the synthesis problem will be based on utilising hybrid control and in particular piecewise linear control, where now not the plant is varying, but the specifications, disturbances or controllers. A particular focus will be on analogues of the `linear' (Bode-like) performance measures, because these are widely appreciated and used in industry. Together with the fact that piecewise linear controllers are close in nature to the well-accepted linear controllers and are easy to implement, the transfer of our results to industry is warranted. As such, this project will lead to a fundamentally new perspective on high-performance control of linear motion systems tailored to industrial practice.
The methods developed will be applied to two industrial motion systems, namely a lithography application (wafer scanner motion stage) and a motion base (for the professional simulator industry developing e.g. flight simulators and vehicle driving simulators).
