Catalysis in complex media: Industrial application of manganese based oxidation catalysts and the role of microenvironments and additives in determining reactivity (11059)

Project nummer: 11059

Omschrijving van het onderzoek

Over the last two decades the manganese based catalyst [Mn2O3(Me3TACN)2]2+ (where Me3TACN= 1,4,7-trimethyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane), better known as the OMO Power catalyst that was introduced by Unilever in 1994, have proven to be remarkably efficient over a broad spectrum of applications from selective oxidations for fine chemicals to bulk processes such as laundry and cotton/wood pulp bleaching. Mechanistic studies of this catalyst have focused primarily on applications involving fine chemical synthesis in relatively simple media, i.e. catalyst/substrate/terminal-oxidant/solvent. Relatively little attention has been directed towards understanding how this catalyst works in complex media such as in laundry, pulp and cotton bleaching and waste water stream remediation. Hence there is a considerable gap in our mechanistic understanding of oxidation catalysis in complex multi-phase media. In this research program we will address two major challenges in applying the catalyst and related catalysts to bulk industrial applications including e.g. wood pulp and raw cotton bleaching and (fine)chemical oxidation processes. The primary research line will focus on identifying the active forms of Mn-Me3TACN catalysts in complex non-homogenous media and understanding at a molecular level how pH, buffers and additives interfere with/promote the activity of these catalysts. A central component to this is the challenge presented in probing such systems spectroscopically and this program will apply a relatively new spectroscopic tool, UV-Raman in addition to integrating sphere techniques, to allow for detailed examination in real time of highly complex and non-homogenous reaction mixtures.
