Surface and bulk nanostructure influence on dissipation in nanoelectromechanical resonators (10082)

Omschrijving van het onderzoek

N anoelectromechanical resonators represent the marriage of semiconductor processing to mechanical engineering at submicron length scales . However, as t he resonator size is reduced the surface to volume ratio increases making nanoresonators susceptible, besides bulk defects, to a variety of surface related noise mechanisms (i.e., gas molecules impinging the surface, loss due to defects and impurities etc.). A central theme in nanoresonator research is the pursuit of ultrahigh quality factors Q (ratio of stored to dissipated energy within an oscillation cycle) since t he latter limits the sensitivity to externally applied forces, sets the level of fluctuations that degrade its spectral purity, and determines the minimum intrinsic operation power. Within this context, we aim to study surface and internal structure effects that influence energy dissipation of nano resonators.
