"Exploration of sugar uptake in the filamentous fungus Aspergillus niger - to control fungal spore germination and to design new strategies to increase metabolite production"
The goals of this research line is to bridge the gap between extracellular polysaccharide degradation and intracellular regulatory systems, by investigating the transport of sugars from the extracellular environment into the cytoplasm. We are utilizing "omics" technologies for obtaining leads on transport systems, and investigating these leads using yeast tester strains, as well as by the manipulation of A. niger itself. Goals are to obtain A. niger strains with specifically altered transport properties, and to analyse the effect of these changes on the organism at a number of levels including transcription, metabolism, metabolite production and growth rate.
