Synthesis of novel peptide substrates to monitor the thrombin activity in blood (NGC.6028)

Omschrijving van het onderzoek

Feline infectious peritonitis is a fatal disease in cats caused by a coronavirus, feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV). In this project the genes responsible for virulence are identified and deleted by reverse genetics technology to generate an attenuated virus able to protect against virulent FIPV infection. Moreover, to enhance the safety of the vaccine virus its gene order is reorganized. Finally, to additionally use the virus as a vaccine against other pathogens, genes encoding antigens from such pathogens are incorporated into the viral genome.
FIPV is the leading infectious cause of mortality in young cats in pedigree cats and shelters and, due also to the lack of therapeutic options, it is one of the major concerns of cat owners. No effective vaccine is currently available but such a vaccine would obviously fill an urgent need and find a great market. If additionally protecting against other feline infections its value would only increase. The project is carried out in a collaboration with a large international vaccine company.
