Omschrijving van het onderzoek

In various branches of industry mixed crystallization in multi-component systems play an important role. In order to determine the state of such a system after crystallisation one usually assumes that the system is in equilibrium and calculated the equilibrium state .i.e. the state with the lowest Gibbs free energy. However, in many cases this assumption is not valid due to the kinetics of the crystallisation process. As a consequence of the kinetics the solid phase will contain composition gradients. Due to the very slow diffusion in solids the transition to equilibrium state, which consists of homogeneous phase, does not occur or takes place extremely slowly. In such cases one speaks of a frozen-in metastable state. This projects deals with the determination of these metastable states, both theoretically and experimentally.
