Functional molecular networks (TAF.6543)

Omschrijving van het onderzoek

We propose an enabling, Low Energy Electron Microscope (LEEM) study of the formation kinetics and equilibrium structures of two-dimensional supramolecular networks. In this proposed study, our prime focus will be on manipulating these networks to form small, well-defined structures on surfaces. Specifically, we set ourselves the goal of fabricating functionalized templates with well-defined size and structure, that can be further applied in the creation of nanoelectronic devices. We will try to achieve this by depositing layers of suitable organic molecules on a metal substrate to form well-organized networks that are stabilized by noncovalent bonds. The highly periodic structure of this type of self-assembled networks is advantageous as it will enable diffraction contrast in the LEEM measurements. The benefits of synthetic chemistry are available to create functionalized molecules that make for a suitable experimental system. To succesfully manipulate these networks and form usable templates, intricate knowledge of the key parameters that govern their formation is required. We will use LEEM to study the growth and formation of these networks, as well as their equilibrium dynamics. Our proposed LEEM study will give this required insight in the energetics and kinetics of the networks, which we then will employ to exercise control over the type and size of structures that can be formed. Successful completion of this study will facilitate the routine fabrication of functionalized supramolecular substrates with a finetuned size/structure.
