Ataktos - The origins of switching field distribution in patterned magnetic multilayered media (10013)

Omschrijving van het onderzoek

This project deals with interfaces between metallic thin films, such as metallic multilayers. As technology moves towards smaller dimensions, the properties of devices become dominated by interfaces between the different materials in the device, rather than the bulk properties of the materials themselves. An example is the magnetic surface anisotropy, which was explored in the past to realise multilayered films with a perpendicular easy axis of magnetisation for magneto-optic recording media. The surface anisotropy is very sensitive to the exact arrangement of atoms at the interface. The magnetic properties of the multilayer can therefore be used as a sensitive probe to study the relation between the qualitity of the interface and the deposition conditions during nucleation and growth.
Driven by the magnetic recording industry, the knowledge on surface anisotropy has reached an excellent level, and material combinations with very high anisotropy have been developed.
In this project we will investigate the origin of the inhomogeneities in Co based multilayered films, and the contribution to the switching field distribution of patterned magnetic media prepared from such films.
The knowledge about intrinsic variation of the properties of sputtered metallic multilayers is of vital importance to the development of magnetic patterned media. In general however, we will acquire a deeper insight in the inhomogeneity of sputtered metal-metal interfaces, which will benefit the thin film research community at large.
