"There is plenty of room at the top" (TET.6630)

Project nummer: tet6630

Omschrijving van het onderzoek

Miniaturization of electronics has fed the digital revolution. The present-day microchip offers the electronic functions 'computation' and 'information storage', and as such is an essential component of our modern world. Here we propose to add new functionality to microchips, by means of wafer-scale post-processing these chips. In the post-processing stage, extra layers are added on top of the chip, with specific properties such as sensitivity to ionizing radiation, or (ultrasound) acoustic waves. So far, only a limited range of suitable post-processing techniques exist; we aim to add significantly to this emerging field. In the proposed research, new post-processing techniques will be investigated to create a technology platform for completely new monolithic microsystems. The new technology will be applied together with existing steps to create prototypes for attractive new systems. Examples are an ultrasound system on a chip for surface and bulk analysis, and a high-resolution X-ray camera on a chip.
