Omschrijving van het onderzoek

Scoliosis is a three-dimensional deformity of the spinal column, which occurs mostly in girls during adolescence. Current implanted metal correction rods result in a straight, but completely stiff spine. With this project we will realise a scoliosis correction device that keeps the spine flexible. It also allows growth of the spine, so it can be used in an early stage. After use it can be removed, leaving a healthy spine.
To optimize the design of the correction device we will develop a numerical simulation model of the mechanical behaviour of the spine with the scoliosis correction device.
