EXPLORE: Experimentation Platform for Organic Reactions (TMM.5605)

Project nummer: tmm5605

Omschrijving van het onderzoek

The goal of this project is to develop and test microreactor systems ("Lab-on-a-Chip" technology) for organic synthesis under high pressures, which in conventional reaction systems are difficult to realise because of safety reasons. Although the microsystems, because of their inherently safe character, may also be of interest for small scale industrial production, their main application will be to provide a convenient high-throughput experimentation platform for automated parallel synthesis and analysis of
very large numbers of "leads" for the development of specialty chemicals, like pharmaceutical products. This approach can dramatically reduce the development cycle of new chemical products, therewith speeding up commercialisation as well as increasing the chances of technical success and innovation through greater parameter diversity in the product/process screening phase.
In this proposal we will concentrate on cycloaddition reactions of general use that require high-pressure conditions and consequently are less favourable to perform in industrial environments. Lab-on-a-chip technology gives excellent access to study this type of reactions without the special precautions that are needed when working with conventional lab-scale equipment. For this study cycloaddition reactions have been selected that have a strong pressure dependence. First the well-known Diels-Alder reaction will be studied, for which occasionally high pressures are required. Furthermore [2+2]- and 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions will be investigated which sometimes also need high pressures to proceed smoothly. These reactions are of particular interest since they involve the one-step formation of six-, four-, and five-membered ring systems, respectively.
