High-speed micro/nanofluidics for bio-applications (TMM.6016)

Project nummer: tmm6016

Omschrijving van het onderzoek

Micro- and nanofluidics have recently obtained a lot of attention. Main reason for this is the strong interest in Lab-on-Chip developments, for which precise fluid control on the sub-nanoliter level is necessary. There is great interest to further increase the speed of fluid handling on the micro/nano scale, both for obtaining higher throughput as well as for using small fluid volumes themselves as information carriers e.g. in DNA- and combinatorial computing using fluids.
We propose to investigate new mechanisms, effects and techniques for rapid fluid control and cellular analysis, using the following approaches: Ultrafast bubble-train generation in nanochannels, 2) Ultrafast mixer of two miscible liquids and 3) Field effect control in nanochannels.
Utilisation
There are several potential application areas of the research proposed above. First, the exploration of nanofluidics systems consisting uniquely of double layers may give very powerful new separation and detection principles for charged (bio)molecules (proteins). Secondly, the integration of electrochemical detectors into micro- and nanochannels enables selective and sensitive detection. On the basis of such detectors, systems for rapid analysis of blood samples can be envisaged. Finally, there is great interest to apply the potential of microfluidic control to cell-sorting and subsequent (bio)chemical treatment and analysis. Such a Lab-on-Chip system would enable complete single-cell selection and analysis on a single device and have as such a great value for use in biochemical and biomedical applications. A significant interest from pharmaceutical and diagnostic companies as well as instrument manufacturers is expected.
