Reversal & interaction studies of nanosized magnetic structures for very high density recording (TMM.6017)

Project nummer: tmm6017

Omschrijving van het onderzoek

This proposal is motivated by the search forever increasing bit densities in magnetic data storage technology. It is expected that recording technologies, such as perpendicular magnetic recording media and using advanced GMR/TMR head technologies are pushing the bitdensity far above 500Gbit/in2. The mentioned trends have all in common: pushing the magnetic recording technologies into nano-size dimensions. Important fundamental feature is the switching mechanism of such small units. Another very important issue, in relation with nano-size dimensions of magnetic material, is the superparamagnetic limit where the thermal energy (KT) approaches the magnetic energy (kV). Studying the magnetisation reversal processes and interactions of such structures are very important in designing new devices (heads and media) for (future) high-density storage technologies. Another important development is the application of Magnetic RAM technology, which also required a more precise experimental study of switching behaviour and magnetic interaction effects.
The proposed project concerns with nanotechnology, an experimental analysis method and micromagnetic modelling and simulations. For preparing small structures (patterning of thin films) we are planning to develop and apply e-beam lithography, focus ion beam and (reactive) ion etching technologies. This should lead to well-defined and reproducible small elements with typical dimensions in the order of a nanometer scale. Magnetic and structural characterisation of the individual small structures, and assemblies of those, will be carried out with chemical and structural analysis methods. Micromagnetic simulations and modelling will be used to explain the experimental results and to get more inside in the important parameters, which determine the reversals and interactions.
