Spout fluid beds find widespread application for the production of granules or particles through granulation (for example detergents, fertilizers, pharmaceuticals and food). Spout fluid beds have a number of advantageous properties, such as a high mobility of the particles, which prevents undesired agglomeration.
The particle growth mechanism as function of particle-droplet interaction has a profound influence on the particle morphology and thus on the product quality. Nevertheless, little is known about the details of the granulation process. This is mainly due to the fact that the granulation process is not visually accessible. The use of any measurement probes is also problematic, since it disturbs the flow and thus the granulation process. Furthermore, due to the granulation process measurement probes would soon be covered with a layer of granulate material, disabling the probe and spoiling the measurement. An alternative to investigate the granulation behavior in detail is the usage of non-intrusive measurement tools and fundamental, deterministic discrete element models as proposed in this project.
