Design rules for close tolerance and lubricant free piston compressors (06715)

Omschrijving van het onderzoek

The research is concerned with development and utilization of highly efficient and reliable unlubricated (i.e. oil free) piston compressors. The compressor can operate unlubricated due to a thin layer of coating or surface treatment at the cylinder and the piston wall, and adjusted construction for minimizing the wall friction loads. Surface layers are exposed to high amplitude oscillating transient heat fluxes and temperatures. Accurate predictions of these conditions are important for the operational performance, service periods and life time and specifically for eliminating the danger of the failure due to fatigue and/or thermal expansion of the elements. The transient heat flux and the near wall temperature distribution are investigated in both modelling and experimental ways.
The lubricant free PCC can be utilized in number of important engineering areas and technological designs. Most obvious examples are piston compressors for air, gas and refrigeration vapor and cryogenic coolers (cryoliquifyers). Applications are in localized gas liquefaction plants, gas storage and gas transportation, electronic thermal noise suppression by cryogenic cooling and superconductivity technology.
