Omschrijving van het onderzoek

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), a member of the family Arteriviridae, order Nidovirales, causes mild to severe clinical problems - including abortion, stillbirth and pre-weaning mortality of piglets, as well as growth retardation and enhanced sensitivity to other pathogens. The disease is now endemic in most of the pig-producing countries and is considered one of the biggest problems facing the pig industry. Only classical vaccines - both attenuated and inactivated virus preparations - are available but new and better vaccines are urgently needed because the attenuated vaccines are known to revert to virulence, while the inactivated ones are simply ineffective. In addition, both types of vaccines have gradually lost much of their efficacy due to the continual emergence of new serotypes. Hence, the aim of the present project is the development of a new generation, safe and effective vaccine.
