Omschrijving van het onderzoek

This project is focussed on the development of a novel optical biopsy method for cancer diagnosis. The method is based on scanning tissues like skin with ultra-short laser pulses and recording the optical signals. The laser excites auto-fluorescence signals that are characteristic for the biochemical state of the tissue. In addition, a highly specific signal for collagen is produced. Previous work showed that these signals can be used to discriminate between healthy and diseased tissues. Here, a colour sensitive detector is used to simultaneously record all signals. The project involves the development of a mobile prototype and an extensive test program that will be carried out in collaboration with several clinical groups. Technological challenges include the development of a fibre coupled hand-held probe with miniaturized scanners. The probe will be developed in close collaboration with an industrial partner.
