Understanding the behaviour of laying hens (Gallusgallus domesticus) in large groups: the effect of selection method and of early-life history (07525)

Project nummer: 07525

Omschrijving van het onderzoek

The aim of this project is to study the effects of selection method and of early-life history on behavioural development of laying hens. Laying hens often develop damaging behaviours, such as feather pecking and cannibalism, leading to impaired animal welfare. A novel method of genetic selection, in which birds are not only selected on their own performance but also on the effect they have on their group mates, allows us to select birds that are less cannibalistic. It is unknown, however, what the effect of such a selection method is on behavioural development of the birds: are we selecting for social birds or for birds that are totally irresponsive to their environment? We study the effects of this selection method on behavioural development in combination with adapted conditions during early life, e.g. rearing with or without a foster mother. It is known that the presence of a mother during early life positively affects behavioural development of the chicks, resulting in chicks that are less fearful, more active and that show less feather pecking. This project will provide unique knowledge on the effects of selection method and of early-life history on behavioural development of laying hens. This knowledge can be used to improve breeding programs and rearing conditions of laying hens. In the long term, these improvements will lead to improved welfare of laying hens and can help the poultry industry to respond to the societal demand for welfare-friendly housing systems.
