The search for resistance against economically important plant diseases caused by Verticillium in arabidopsis and tomato (WGC.7791)

Project nummer: wgc7791

Omschrijving van het onderzoek

Plant pathogens take their share of food and feed production, and most microbial plant pathogens are foliar pathogens that specifically target plant leaves. Some pathogens, however, target the xylem and vascular wilts are among the most devastating plant diseases because no curative control measures exist. In this project, the model plant Arabidopsis (Brassicaceae) and the crop plant tomato (Solanaceae) will be used to study Verticillium - host interactions. In this project, it will be attempted to identify host plant components as well as pathogen factors that may play a determinant role in Verticillium wilt diseases. These factors will be functionally analyzed with respect to their role in the host-pathogen interaction. The knowledge obtained in this project should ultimately provide novel strategies for the protection of crops against vascular pathogens.
