Perspectives of black carbon in sediment risk reduction (10030)

Omschrijving van het onderzoek

Aquatic sediments in industrialized countries often are highly polluted. The high costs for remediation of such polluted sediments often lead to stagnation of maintenance of the water system and beneficial reuse of sediments. Recently it was shown that high affinity sorbents (for instance natural black carbon or manufactured activated carbon) added to sediments are able to bind organic pollutants very effectively. Main objective of this project is to develop safe technologies to reduce the risks of contaminated sediments to safe limits, using such carbon additions. The work includes sorption studies, studies addressing possible negative ecological effects of carbon amendments, flux- and bioaccumulation measurements, system-modeling, large scale field trials, and translation into process designs for sediment risk reduction and cleaning that directly can be implemented by end-users in this program.
