Broad-spectrum resistance to root knot nematodes by disruption of genes essential for feeding cell development (10997)

Omschrijving van het onderzoek

The root knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita is able to parasitize hundreds of plant species and is a major threat in nearly all vegetable-growing regions in the world. The most effective methods for nematode control are pesticides and the growth of resistant cultivars. However, nematicides face a global ban, because they are extremely hazardous to humans and to the environment. Unfortunately, resistance is in many vegetable crops not available, or is not effective. Current resistance is based on major dominant resistance (R) genes, which are frequently overcome by the occurrence of resistance-breaking races. Despite the relatively short lifespan of these major R genes, breeding companies are still searching for major R genes of the NB-LRR class to combat root knot nematodes because no alternatives are available. The aim of this project is to develop broad spectrum resistance to the root knot nematode M. incognita by disrupting the function of plant genes that are essential for feeding cell induction and maintenance. The implementation of our strategy requires no GM technology and is based on efficient assays to search for non-functional alleles in natural or mutagenized populations.
