Denitrification with dissolved methane from anaerobic digestion: a novel opportunity for sewage treatment (07736)
Project nummer:
07736
Omschrijving van het onderzoek
This project investigates the feasibility of a new concept for sewage treatment. This concept consists of two consecutive treatment steps. In the first treatment step an integrated anaerobic upflow sludge blanket (UASB) reactor – digester system converts the organic wastewater pollutants into the energy carrier methane gas. The effluent from this anaerobic treatment step contains nitrogen as well as dissolved methane. Both of these need to be removed. Recently microorganisms were discovered which can combine their removal by coupling anaerobic methane oxidation to denitrification. A successful combination of the above (biological) treatment steps results in a new, compact, cost-effective and climate friendly wastewater treatment system.
The project aims to:
(1) determine the relevant microbiological parameters of the microorganisms that couple anaerobic methane oxidation to denitrification
(2) determine the technological design criteria of the whole treatment concept
(3) assess the technological and economical feasibility of the concept.
The project is carried out by the sub-department of Environmental Technology of Wageningen University and by the Department of Microbiology of Radboud University Nijmegen.
