In this project, a novel type of multi-scale modelling will be developed to understand and simulate the dynamics of stiffness transition zones in railway tracks, as well as to mitigate transitional wavefields. Current models can reliably model either the large scale (transition zone embedded in entire track) or the small scale (detailed behaviour of the granular ballast), while both are intimately related. The multi-scale modelling relies on the coupling of finite and semi-infinite domains (track parts) containing discrete lattices through a boundary formulation, which is facilitated by combining analytical and numerical techniques.
