Loss of water quality in eutrofied aquatic ecosystems is largely caused by overwhelming growth of ‘bad’ cyanobacteria, that outcompete ‘good’ green algae. Most scaring is that cyanobacteria can produce potent toxins. Despite serious constraints on water usability for a range of important societal activities, safe drinking water, water for irrigation in agriculture, aqua culture and fish farms, and water recreation the key problem, too much phosphate in a lake is recurrent and appears hard to solve. Therefore, Interest in other mitigation measures is increasing. The Cyanostopper project extends on a proof of principle tested method that uses hydrogen peroxide as a biocide for selective killing of cyanobacteria in the entire water body of lakes in a few days only. We will develop a decision support tool, handling protocols and study new ideas that will contribute to safe, fast, sustainable and financially affordable mitigation of aquatic ecosystems with potential for application on a world-wide scale.
