Industrial doctorates

Call Type

The Industrial Doctorates pilot programme focuses on promoting collaborations between knowledge institutions and industry, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Within the programme, a PhD student carries out work at both the knowledge institute and the participating company. Bringing scientific knowledge closer to industry enhances opportunities for application of that knowledge.

Start Impulse
The pilot programme is part of the Start Impulse that was issued for the Dutch National Research Agenda by Sander Dekker, secretary of State for Education, Culture and Science. This agenda focusses on the impact of the scientific research. The same applies to the Industrial Doctorates programme. The intensive cooperation contributes to talent development and creates or enhances opportunities for applying scientific knowledge.

The Industrial Doctorates programme is open to candidates who recently obtained their master’s degree (or are about to), as well as talents already working at a company who want to obtain their doctorate. Candidates may be active in any scientific domain and participation is not limited to industry.

  • NWO funds the programme with a contribution from its Ministry of Education, Culture and Science budget
  • Participating companies contribute to the research projects both in kind and in cash. The Industrial Doctorates programme has an emphasis on collaborations with SMEs. The programme therefore has reduced contribution requirements for SMEs.
  • The knowledge institutions provide guidance and research infrastructure.

Public-private partnerships (PPPs)
Within the NWO PPP programmes the Industrial Doctorates programme distinguishes itself by a focus on talent development and intensive bilateral cooperation of one company and one knowledge institute.

Pilot programme
As this call for proposals is a pilot, this is a single opportunity for now.
