Partnership STW-Paques: The Volatile Fatty Acid Platform

This Partnership Program is focused on the development of the volatile fatty acid (VFA) platform for the production of biobased products from waste biomass streams. The ambition of this program is to increase understanding of the VFA production process and to develop novel processes to recover these VFA and to convert them to biobased products.

Budget
STW Partnership Programs foster collaboration between academic and industrial researchers. A budget of € 3,000,000 is available for this program, funded jointly by Paques (€ 1.5M), STW (€ 0.5M), NWO Chemical Sciences (€ 0.5M) and the NWO General Board (€ 0.5M). For each project, a maximum of € 750,000 in project costs can be requested from STW. The typical duration of a partnership project is between 2 and 5 years.

Who can apply?
Scientists employed by Dutch universities or para academic institutes eligible for STW funding can submit proposals.

Single stage submission and evaluation
In order to speed up the process, there will be no pre-proposal stage, the submission and evaluation process consists of a call for full proposals, followed by peer review and evaluation by the Program Committee. Fit into the program will be a very important criterion and, in order to maximize their chances, applicants are therefore strongly advised to contact Paques and discuss their ideas before submitting the full proposal.

While no pre-selection is planned, STW reserves the right to add a pre-selection if a very large number of proposals is selected. Therefore, in order to delay the process as little as possible a notification of intent to submit a full proposal is mandatory. Please notify the STW contact (Ron Winkler, see below), no later than 3 September 2012.

Program Committee evaluation and selection
The Program Committee will evaluate the proposals regarding the scientific quality, utilisation perspective and the strategic fit of the full proposals in the program. Based on the advice of the Program Committee, the STW Board will decide, also on behalf of Paques, on the funding of the full proposals. The Program Committee has been appointed by the STW Board. The committee consists of three industrial members from Paques and three independent academic members.
