Parallel codes for circuit analysis and control engineering (CWI2703).

Project nummer: cwi2703

Omschrijving van het onderzoek

Mathematical modelling of many problems in circuit analysis and in the dynamics of control systems involves the numerical solution of initial-value problems for (usually) large systems of nonlinear ordinary differential equations. Examples of applications where these problems arise include the modelling of VLSI and MOS (metal-on-oxide) digital devices, control of navigation systems, of thermal processes, of manipulators (robotics), etc..
In solving the initial-value problems indicated above, aspects as high-speed processing, fast (real-time) response, and adaptive control play an important role. Especially, high-speed processing and fast response is of crucial importance. For instance, in many control engineering and circuit analysis problems it is a common challenge to generate response (commands) in real time, implying the necessity of high-speed processing. Consequently, the development and use of parallel codes for integrating the associated differential equations is indispensable.
This project aims at the design and implementation of algorithms for solving problems in circuit analysis and control engineering on parallel systems. Existing codes were developed for one-processor computers and have little scope for parallelization. Therefore, the algorithms to be developed in this project are not based on parallelization of existing initial-value-problem solvers designed for oneprocessor computers, but are newly designed especially for use on parallel systems. In such an approach, much larger speed-up factors can be obtained.
