Advanced simulation techniques for vortex dominated flows in aerodynamics (TWI.5541)
Project nummer:
twi5541
Omschrijving van het onderzoek
In this project new simulation techniques will be developed for flows with strong turbulent vortical structures which are important in aerodynamics. The numerical simulation of vortex dominated flows puts severe demands on both the accuracy of the numerical algorithm and the modeling of the complex physics. This project aims at an improved simulation of vortex dominated flows by using large-eddy simulations in combination with advanced numerical techniques.
In large-eddy simulations only the large vortical structures in the ow eld are computed directly, which makes it in principle possible, in terms of computing power, to simulate complex vortex dominated turbulent flows. The physics of the smaller vortical structures must, however, be modelled, and this is an important topic in this research project. Vortex dominated ows have a strong local behavior and the use of locally rened meshes can signicantly improve numerical accuracy. The use of these techniques in large-eddy simulations presents however signicant complications in both the mathematical and numerical modelling and these topics will receive special attention in this project. In addition, it is not easy to maintain numerical accuracy on locally rened meshes and this is an important reason why special attention is given to the development of a so-called discontinuous Galerkin nite element method for the calculation of compressible flows.
The main results of this project are an improved numerical and mathematical modeling of flows with strong turbulent vortical structures and, in close collaboration with the National Aerospace Laboratory, a demonstration of the capabilities in aerodynamics. Important applications of the developed techniques are simulations of a helicopter rotor wake for aero-acoustic analyses, propeller airplanes which can vertically take-off and land, the reduction of problems due to strong vortices for airplanes during take o and landing, and the determination of the maneuvering properties of aircraft under flow conditions dominated by strong vortices.
